MONTE ALTISSIMO - Comune di Nago - Torbole (Tn)
From CAMERINI F., STENGHEL G., Il Garda Verticale, ed. Zeta-Beta 2002
The side in Trentino region of Monte Baldo massif culminates with Monte Altissimo of Nago, more than 2000 meters high. At its base, towards the lake, beautiful faces of limestone-rock form a lot of funny cliffs, which can be climbed most part of the year.
Grola route
First climbers: Zanotti, Parisi and Calzà in 1985
Length: 850 meters
Level: II and III; 1 sequence of IV
Material: 1 piton, belays excluded: V
ACCESS
From the East Gardesana highway, at the boundary of the province of Trento and Verona, begins the tunnel that protects from the stone. After going ahead a gate, climb on the roof of the tunnel which runs southwards 500 meters long.
Mountaineer route on solid rock and very satisfactory on an environmental point of view, for the length and the lake view. The route is attended by a lot of climbers and it seems that it has been equipped by some bolts recently. The return is in rappel along the climbing route.
At the beginning the route goes along an eroded couloir which has to be climbed about 300 meters (II and III); at the end, cross a small trail used by ENEL to control the electricity pylons. In this specific point you are at the base of a big slab of smooth rocks that you can pass in their middle in friction climbing (50° slope).
Important info: we hear news that this face should be a protected area, it means that there could be climbing interdiction. Anyway we think that it is correct to mention it as a very beautiful route with not extreme difficulties: a “rare piece” on the lake cliffs that a lot of climbers will probably not be able to climb anymore.
