BRIONE MOUNTAIN

From: CAMERINI F. - STENGHEL G., Il Garda verticale, ed. Zeta-Beta 2002.

Brione mountain, a rock promontory which rises between Riva del Garda and Torbole: a long time ago, when the glacial strips went down from the mountains they filled up the Sarca valley and the Benaco field, this promontory rose completely isolated in the middle of that prehistoric see of ice. Today the postglacial isle is there to embellish the picturesque landscape of Riva, with its face of more than 250 meters high, divided in two parts. The first one, more interesting on a mountaineering point of view , is a long rock barrier with huge caves that, towards the lake, creates an interesting buttress of white rocks. The second one, it is broken by wide ledges and ramps of trees. This feature, together with the rock that is quite often crumbling, didn’t help the climbing on this small mountain. Because of its remote location, Brione mountain was fortified by the Austrians in anticipation of the war with the Kingdom of Italy and even today, beyond its walls, you can find some ruins of that defense positions.

There is only one route - CARLOTTA ROUTE
First climbers: Guido Zanoni; Mazzoldi Eugenio - alternate control on 26th May 1984
Length: 110 meters
Level: V-VI-A2
Material: 10 pitons left there, nuts from 7 to 11
Climbing time of the first climbers: 4,30 hours
The first climbers relate the route well protected and even if the rock is crumbling, there is the possibility to use nuts.
Running the highway between Riva and Torbole pass the tunnel and go on up to thefollowing tunnel which protects from the stones, at the end of this one you can see the big “pilastro bianco”. The route passes the dihedral which borders the ight side of the buttress.
By walk, enter in the countryside about 100 meters and climb to the old olive (burnt) which is indicated on the sketch.
